Mammoth Cave National Park is open 24-hours a day, although services such as cave tours and the visitor center are limited after-hours (generally the visitor center closes at 4:30 pm in winter or 6:00 pm in summer). There is no gate at the park entrance. Please note that camping is only possible either in designated campgrounds or backcountry campsites with a valid reservation or permit.

Front-Country Hiking

Consider your abilities; visitors will walk down approximately 150 feet of stairs into the sinkhole and return back up. 

This is a 1-mile (1.6 km) loop trail that begins and ends at the Cedar Sink trailhead.  As Cedar Sink is located approximately 10 minutes away from the visitor center, you will need to factor travel time and parking into your schedule for the day.

Mammoth Cave National Park is home to an incredible variety of seasonal wildflowers due to the abundance of forest habitats. One such place an enormous sinkhole called Cedar Sink. It hosts a stunning variety of spring and summer wildflowers, making it a favorite spot for hikers and floral enthusiasts.  The hike is 1-mile roundtrip, with several sets of stairs that will lead you down into the sink hole and back out. A total of 295 stairs will be traveled during the hike.

Owners must keep pets on leashes no longer than 6 feet and clean up after their pets. 

There are many striking wildflowers to see throughout the warmer parts of spring, summer, and fall.   As wildflowers bloom and give way to other wildflower species, visitors are consistently rewarded by frequent visits to cedar sink throughout the year and even throughout single seasons.

Stunning rock faces, cave springs, and geological panoramas, you will experience a wide array of seasonal wildflowers and biodiversity.

For a quiet hike into Cedar Sink, visitors may like to visit early in the morning before the park begins to fill up.

<h2>Viewing Safely</h2> <ul> <li>Keep a safe distance. Deer may appear tame and may approach vehicles, but they are wild animals and can be unpredictable and dangerous.</li> <li>Store your food and stash your trash. Feeding wildlife is prohibited. Feeding wildlife can make the animal sick or cause them to seek handouts from humans in dangerous areas like roads or parking lots. Animals used to human contact lose their fear of humans and may become aggressive. Wildlife may also carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans.</li> <li>Do not disturb. Feeding, touching, and harassing wildlife is strictly prohibited. Pets must be always kept on-leash, fecal matter picked up, and vaccinations up to date when visiting the park. Do not use bird calls or wildlife calls and attractants. If you find a sick or injured animal, leave it where it is and alert a park ranger.</li> <li>Keep your eyes on the road. Wildlife may be present on park roads at any time of day or night. Obey posted speed limits and watch for wildlife as they cross the road. Every year wildlife such as, deer, turkey, and turtles are killed on park roadways due to vehicle collisions.</li> <li>When viewing wildlife, remember that your safety is your responsibility.</li> </ul> <h2>Where to See Wildlife in the Park</h2> <h3>The Surface</h3> Many species of animals can be viewed aboveground throughout the park. Larger mammals include white-tailed deer, fox, raccoons, opossums, beavers, rabbits, and squirrels. Smaller mammals, such as bats, mice, and chipmunks also abound. Many reptiles and amphibians find protection in the park, too, such as copperheads and rattlesnakes. Birds such as mourning doves, whippoorwills, owls, hawks, woodpeckers, and warblers may be seen along the miles of hiking trails. For a good opportunity to view marsh birds and several species of turtles and frogs, visit Sloans Crossing Pond. Additionally, the trails near the visitor center are a great place to view white-tailed deer in the early morning and evenings. Wild turkeys, reintroduced in 1983, are also regularly seen near the campground and visitor center. To try to see bats in flight, depending on the season, the best time is around dusk when bats emerge from their roosts in search of food. Unlike some other caves, the bat species native to the area do not fly out of cave entrances all together in a colony. Rather, bats might be spotted preying upon flying insects drawn to the visitor center parking lot’s streetlights, or other light sources. <h3>On the River</h3> The Green and Nolin Rivers flow through the park and support a notable diversity of fish, a wide variety of mollusks, including over 50 species of mussels, of which seven species are on the endangered species list. While a few species of turtles are frequently seen along the riverbanks, less commonly seen animals include blue herons, river otters, or occasionally a bald eagle. The best opportunity to view wildlife along one of the rivers is to spend the day on the water in a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/canoeing-kayaking-and-boating.htm">canoe or kayak</a>. If time doesn't allow for a paddle trip, visit the banks of the river at Dennison Ferry Day Use Area, Green River Ferry and Echo River Spring Trailhead, or Houchin Ferry Picnic Area. <h3>In the Cave</h3> More than 160 species are regular inhabitants within the Mammoth Cave system. While bats are often the first animal that comes to mind when thinking about caves, they are not frequently seen on tour routes. Historical accounts from the 1800s describe large numbers of bats roosting on the walls and ceilings of passages just inside the Historic Entrance. In modern days, with increased tourism through the cave, deforestation in the area, and the arrival of the White-nose Syndrome causing fungus, it is now uncommon to see bats while on a cave tour. Two other species that used to be seen more often on cave tours are eyeless cavefish, and eyeless crayfish. The animals most commonly seen on cave tours are cave crickets, they are perfectly harmless but do look like spiders at first glance. To view wildlife within Mammoth Cave itself, you must be part of a cave tour. Wildlife such as cave crickets, cave salamanders, and spiders typically frequent the Frozen Niagara and Domes and Dripstones tour routes, but with a careful eye there is a chance to view wildlife on any tour within the cave.

Mammoth Cave is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life ranging from rare exotic cave species to more common woodland creatures. While viewing wildlife can be a highlight of any park visit, it is important to remember that animals in the park are wild. Precautions must be taken to keep not only you, but the wildlife safe.

Attending a ranger-led program in the park is a great way to discover new things and learn more about the Mammoth Cave National Park. All surface programs are offered free of charge, however, there is a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/fees.htm">fee</a> for cave tours. Green River at Houchin Ferry

Trip Distance: 3.6 miles (5.7 km) Approximate Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours This short trip travels along the Green River from Houchin Ferry inside Mammoth Cave National Park to the former site of Lock and Dam #6 or the Brownsville boat ramp. The first half of the trip follows the river inside the park, once outside of the park boundary the river channel is surrounded by private land. Be mindful of private property boundaries when stopping along the river. <a href="https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/backctrycamping.htm">Riverside camping permits</a> are only valid inside the park boundary. The Green River is a dynamic river system with gravel bars, islands, and river channels that change each year. Use caution while recreating on the rivers and steer clear of downed trees and logjams. <h2>About the Green River</h2> The Green River is one of the most biodiverse rivers in the country. It is home to more than 150 fish species, more than 70 species of mussel including many threatened or endangered species. The river spans 25 miles (40.2 km) through the park and is dotted with sandbars, islands, and subsurface springs. The river averages 200 feet ( 61 m) wide and 10 feet (3 m) deep, though its depth may be much greater in places. While considered a flat-water river, the current can still be very swift and prior paddling experience is recommended. Regardless of water level, always be alert to hazards such as submerged trees and rocks, drifting debris, and the park's ferry.

Houchin Ferry to Brownsville

Tailwater Recreation Area below the Nolin River Dam is located north of the park and is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Trip Distance: 11.1 miles (17.8 km) Approximate Travel Time: 4 to 6 hours This trip starts at the Tailwater Recreation Area below the Nolin River Dam north of the park. The trip will take paddlers below tall cliffs and steep river banks. Paddlers will continue down the Nolin River approximately 7.5 miles (12 km) to the confluence with the Green River. Once at the confluence with the Green River, turn left onto the Green River and paddle upstream 1.7 miles (2.7 km) to Houchin Ferry. An alternate take out spot is the former site of Lock and Dam #6 or the boat ramp in the town on Brownsville, 3.2 miles (5.1 km) downstream from the confluence of the Nolin and Green Rivers. The Nolin River is a dynamic river system with a narrow river channel that changes each year. Use caution while recreating on the rivers and steer clear of downed trees and logjams. <h2>About the Nolin River</h2> 7.5 miles (12 km) of the Nolin River span from the Tailwater Recreation Area, part of the <a href="https://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Recreation/Lakes/Nolin-River-Lake/">US Army Corps of Engineers Nolin River Lake and Dam Area</a>, to the confluence with the Green River in the park. In 2016 there was a failure of Lock and Dam No. 6 on the Green River, downstream of the confluence with the Nolin River, and the dam was ultimately removed. The removal of the dam has resulted in lower water levels and swifter river currents. Water levels can change rapidly due to weather (i.e. rise 20-50 feet in the hours and days after a rain event) or due to water release schedules from the Nolin River Dam. Serious hazards such as fallen or submerged trees and rocks, drifting debris and swift currents can exist. Paddlers on the river should be familiar with operating paddle craft on moving water as part of a dynamic river system. <h2>About the Green River</h2> The Green River is one of the most biodiverse rivers in the country. It is home to more than 150 fish species, more than 70 species of mussel including many threatened or endangered species. The river spans 25 miles (40.2 km) through the park and is dotted with sandbars, islands, and subsurface springs. Several riverside caves and springs are accessible. At lower water levels, numerous gravel bars and low riverbanks offer camping destinations for paddlers with a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/backctrycamping.htm">valid riverside camping permit</a>. The Green River is a dynamic river system with gravel bars, islands, and river channels that change each year. Use caution while recreating on the rivers and steer clear of downed trees and logjams. <h2>About the Green River</h2> The Green River is one of the most biodiverse rivers in the country. It is home to more than 150 fish species, more than 70 species of mussel including many threatened or endangered species. <h2>Always Wear a Life Jacket</h2> Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs/life jacket) are required to be worn while on rivers inside of Mammoth Cave National Park at all times.  It is important that your PFD is properly fitted, and US Coast Guard approved.    <h2>While on The River</h2> Do not exceed your skill level. If you are new to canoeing and kayaking, choose a shorter trip to start out and paddle with an experienced friend. <ul> <li>The rivers in the park are dynamic systems which change constantly. Expect the unexpected; conditions can change quickly. Watch for these changes and take immediate action to reach safety.</li> <li>River hazards exist. Be alert of motorized vessels, fallen trees, submerged trees and rocks, drifting debris and swift current.</li> <li>Know the current conditions. Always check the <a href="https://waterdata.usgs.gov/ky/nwis/uv/?site_no=03309000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060">river level</a> and <a href="https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/weather.htm">weather forecast</a> before launching.</li> <li>The river level can flash flood and/or rise very quickly (i.e. as much as 20-50 feet in the hours and days after a rain event). Be sure to store your canoes and gear on high ground. Secure canoes/watercraft to prevent being swept away while unattended or overnight.</li> <li>More information on <a href="https://www.nps.gov/subjects/healthandsafety/water-vessel-safety.htm">water vessel safety</a> is available for you to review before your river trip.</li> </ul> Should an emergency arise, call 911. Be aware that cell phone service is limited inside Mammoth Cave National Park. Even if you can get a 911 call out, help can still be at least 45-90 minutes or longer away. <h2>Knowing Your Paddling Skill Level</h2> <h3>Beginner</h3> Little to no experience, but comfortable around water, and not afraid to swim with and recover your boat in the case of a capsize. Able to paddle and steer craft to avoid hazards including trees and rocks. Recommended River Conditions <ul style="margin-left: 40px;"> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">River gauge heights from 9 to 15 feet.</li> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">Warm air and river temperatures during late spring through summer, warm fall days.</li> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">There are always hazards present on Green River but they are less consequential when gravel bars are shallow for re-entering boats and temperatures don’t quickly cause the onset of hypothermia.</li> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">It is always preferable to paddle with more experienced paddlers in your group when starting out, as they can speed your learning of river skills and make trips safer and more fun.</li> </ul> <h3>Intermediate</h3> Some experience paddling, able to steer boat quickly and effectively to avoid any hazards even in swift current. Able to assist others in getting capsized vessels to shore. Able to confidently self-rescue without assistance in the case of a capsize. Basic understanding of reading river features such as eddies, strainers, upstream and downstream “V”s. Recommended River Conditions <ul style="margin-left: 40px;"> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">River gauge heights from 9 to 18 feet, but can vary greatly for each paddler.</li> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">Year round depending on current and forecasted temperatures with appropriate clothing for the conditions.</li> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">It is always preferable to paddle with a group that has at least some experienced paddlers for safety and more enjoyable experiences.</li> </ul> <h3>Experienced</h3> Extensive experience paddling on a variety of river conditions. Able to easily control boat to paddle to any point of the river without fail. Able to easily “ferry” back and forth across the river without being pushed downstream, with boat pointed either up or downstream. Proficient at “bracing” to prevent capsize. If a canoer, able to do the “j” stroke, the draw and the pry stroke, to paddle and steer without changing sides in normal paddling and able to solo paddle the canoe. Practiced at emptying and re-entering canoes in deep water. Kayakers can roll or re-enter and pump out kayaks from deep water. Proficient at “reading” river features to interpret underwater hazards. Have adequate equipment properly stowed in vessel to independently solve problems that the group could be presented with on the river, from a leak in a boat to a boat stuck around or under a tree. Trained in the use of throw ropes for rescue. Comfortable with swift-water swimming and able to swim across the river in fast current. Able to start a fire and equipped to comfortably stay the night on the riverbank in an emergency. Recommended River Conditions <ul style="margin-left: 40px;"> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">Launching in the park is prohibited when the river gauge height is over 20 feet.</li> <li style="margin-left: 40px;">Experienced paddlers can paddle Green River year-round in any conditions that they are properly equipped for and comfortable with.</li> </ul> <div style="margin-left: 40px;"> </div> <div> <h2>Leave it at Home</h2> Alcohol is prohibited on the rivers inside the park. Don’t drink or use drugs – alcohol and drugs impact your judgement and coordination. Operating a vessel (boat, kayak, etc.) while under the influence is illegal.   <h2>Safety Considerations Around Green River Ferry</h2> An auto ferry operates on the Green River at River Mile 197. The vessel lacks clear visibility and the ability to stop quickly. It can easily swamp a canoe or kayak. In a mishap, the risk of being pulled under the vessel by the current exists. Extreme caution should be used when approaching the ferry crossing area: <ul> <li>When you encounter the ferry, stay back at the safest distance possible.</li> <li>Make sure that the ferry operator has made eye contact with you prior to crossing its path to continue downstream.</li> <li>Canoes and kayaks must utilize the canoe and kayak access ramp located just upstream from the ferry on the south side at the junction of the Green River and the small Echo River when putting in or taking out their vessels.</li> <li>Boats should never be docked along the bank upriver of the ferry to avoid the risk of being pulled under the ferry vessel.</li> <li>The ferry cannot approach the vehicle ramp to pick up passengers until all boats moving downstream have completely cleared through the area – please don't unnecessarily delay them.</li> </ul>   <h2>Swimming</h2> Swimming in park waters is not recommended. At normal stage, the Green River flows at a relatively brisk 4.3 knots, about 5 miles per hour, which is too strong to swim against. There is no designated swimming area in the park and no lifeguards on duty. Wading in shallow water can also pull you off of your feet. Stay far enough back from moving water so that an accidental trip or slip on wet rocks will not cause you to fall into the current and be swept away. <ul> <li>Swimming, wading, or bathing within 200 feet (61 m) of the Green River Ferry crossing is prohibited.</li> <li>The use of tubes, inflatable pool toys, or pool rafts to float the rivers is prohibited.</li> </ul>   <h2>Boating Regulations</h2> <ul> <li> All boat passengers must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device. </li> <li> River use is prohibited when river levels are at or exceed 20 feet (6 m) on the park's water level gauges. Canoe liveries with permits to operate in the park are prohibited from renting or providing canoes during these times. </li> <li> Never dump or discharge refuse in the water. </li> <li> Do not leave boats unattended for longer than 24 hours without written permission from the Chief Ranger. </li> <li> Boating accidents resulting in property damage, personal injury or death must be reported to a park ranger as soon as possible. </li> <li> Operating a jet ski or any other 1 to 2-person motorized watercraft with a total length of 8 feet (2.4 m) or less is prohibited upon all navigable waters of the park. The use of this type watercraft on navigable park waters is hazardous due to submerged obstructions within river channels. The noise created by use of these types of watercraft is also incompatible with other park uses. </li> <li> Tubing on the rivers inside Mammoth Cave National Park is prohibited. </li> <li> Motorized vessels may not be operated above idle speed within 100 feet (30.4 m) of the Green River Ferry. The area at Green River Ferry is generally recognized as docking and or moorage area. Vessels operating above idle speeds in this area pose a threat to themselves and other boaters/visitors. </li> <li> All other U.S. Coast Guard and Kentucky state boating regulations apply. </li> </ul> </div>

Over 30 miles of the Green and Nolin Rivers trace through the Mammoth Cave National Park and offer a wealth of recreational opportunities. Angle for muskellunge, bluegill, catfish, bass, perch, crappie, and other game fish. Canoe or kayak the rivers looking for wildlife, springs and river bluffs. Camp on islands, in the floodplain, or by the river at the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/houchinferrycg.htm">Houchin Ferry Campground</a>. These rivers offer something for everyone. <h2>About the Rivers</h2> <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Green River</h3> The Green River is one of the most biodiverse rivers in the country. It is home to more than 150 fish species, more than 70 species of mussel including many threatened or endangered species. The river spans 25 miles (40.2 km) through the park and is dotted with sandbars, islands, and subsurface springs. The river averages 200 feet ( 61 m) wide and 10 feet (3 m) deep, though its depth may be much greater in places. While considered a flat-water river, the current can still be very swift and prior paddling experience is recommended. Regardless of water level, always be alert to hazards such as submerged trees and rocks, drifting debris, and the park's ferry. <h3 style="margin-left: 40px;">Nolin River</h3> 7.5 miles (12 km) of the Nolin River span from the Tailwater Recreation Area, part of the <a href="https://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Recreation/Lakes/Nolin-River-Lake/">US Army Corps of Engineers Nolin River Lake and Dam Area</a>, to the confluence with the Green River in the park. In 2016 there was a failure of Lock and Dam No. 6 on the Green River, downstream of the confluence with the Nolin River, and the dam was ultimately removed. The removal of the dam has resulted in lower water levels and swifter river currents. Water levels can change rapidly due to weather (i.e. rise 20-50 feet in the hours and days after a rain event) or due to water release schedules from the Nolin River Dam. Serious hazards such as fallen or submerged trees and rocks, drifting debris and swift currents can exist. Paddlers on the river should be familiar with operating paddle craft on moving water as part of a dynamic river system.   <h2>Planning Your River Trip</h2> <ol> <li>Always wear a life jacket. Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs/life jacket) are required to be worn while on rivers inside of Mammoth Cave National Park at all times.  It is important that your PFD is properly fitted, and US Coast Guard approved.  </li> <li>Let someone know your plan. You should always leave a float plan with family/friends and inform them of your departure and return. Do not forget to inform them when you return so an unnecessary search is not started.</li> <li>Leave alcohol at home. Alcohol is prohibited on the rivers inside the park.</li> <li>Know the water level and weather forecast. River use is prohibited when river levels are at or exceed 20 feet on the park's <a href="https://waterdata.usgs.gov/ky/nwis/uv/?site_no=03309000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060">water level gauges.</a></li> <li>More information on <a href="https://www.nps.gov/subjects/watersports/index.htm">boating and watersports</a> throughout the national park system is available for you to review, including safety and trip planning tips.</li> </ol>   <h2>River Access Points</h2> Within the park there are three river access points accessible by car: Dennison Ferry, Green River Ferry, and Houchin Ferry. All of these sites are located on the south side of the Green River. <ul> <li><a href="https://www.nps.gov/places/dennison-ferry.htm">Dennison Ferry</a> consists of a wooden canoe and kayak ramp with a series of concrete stairs to the water.</li> <li><a href="https://www.nps.gov/places/green-river-ferry.htm">Green River Ferry</a> consists of a gravel canoe and kayak launch ramp and a auto ferry ramp that doubles as a launch site for motorboats.</li> <li><a href="https://www.nps.gov/places/houchin-ferry.htm">Houchin Ferry</a> consist of a temporary canoe and kayak launch ramp. This launch site is often very muddy, please use caution.</li> </ul>   <h2>Current Water Levels on the Green River</h2> In cooperation with the US Geological Survey, the park maintains a <a href="https://waterdata.usgs.gov/ky/nwis/uv/?site_no=03309000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060">water level monitoring station</a> on the Green River inside the park boundary.   <h2>Swimming</h2> Swimming in park waters is not recommended. At normal stage, the Green River flows at a relatively brisk 4.3 knots, about 5 miles per hour, which is too strong to swim against. There is no designated swimming area in the park and no lifeguards on duty. Wading in shallow water can also pull you off of your feet. Stay far enough back from moving water so that an accidental trip or slip on wet rocks will not cause you to fall into the current and be swept away. <ul> <li>Swimming, wading, or bathing within 200 feet (61 m) of the Green River Ferry crossing is prohibited.</li> <li>The use of tubes, inflatable pool toys, or pool rafts to float the rivers is prohibited.</li> </ul>

Owners must keep pets on leashes no longer than 6 feet and clean up after their pets.

Over 30 miles of the Green and Nolin Rivers trace through the Mammoth Cave National Park and offer a wealth of recreational opportunities.

Riders will find miles of wooded backcountry trails suitable for many skills and ages. The trails range from wide, smooth dirt paths that two riders can travel together, to daring, single file, ridgeline trails. <h2>Bringing your horse to the park</h2> Trails 60 miles of backcountry trails north of the Green River are open for horseback riding. Trailer Parking Day-use horseback riders can park trailers at the following trailheads on the north side of the park: <ul> <li>First Creek Trailhead</li> <li>Lincoln Trailhead</li> <li>Maple Springs Trailhead</li> <li>Maple Springs Campground, across the road from bulletin board</li> <li>Temple Hill Trailhead</li> </ul> <h2>Trail Rules and Stewardship</h2> Horseback riders can provide an excellent example to all visitors by following the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm">Seven Leave No Trace Principles</a> as well as these park rules: <ul> <li>Horseback riding is prohibited on all park roads.</li> <li>When hikers and horses meet, horses must be slowed to a walk and hikers should remain quiet.</li> <li>Stay on marked trails only. Do not shortcut trails or follow social trails - this erodes and damages trails.</li> <li>Trails can become muddy in some locations after rain. To preserve the trail surface avoid riding after recent rainstorms or when trails are excessively wet.</li> <li>Always hitch horses more than 100 feet away from designated campsites, trails or water sources.</li> <li>Never tie horses to trees. Always cross-tie horses between trees.</li> <li>Leave no litter in the backcountry. Since prehistoric times, humans have looked up at the night sky and pondered the wonders of the universe. People have used the stars and planets to navigate, keep track of time, and to connect with other cultures. Regardless of your reason, Mammoth Cave National Park provides an ideal place for stargazing. After a day of hiking, kayaking and exploring the cave, the fun doesn’t have to stop there, because half the park is after dark! <h2>Tips for Stargazing in the Park</h2> <ul> <li>A red light works best. Flashlights with red lights will allow you to navigate walkways in the dark without disturbing your night vision.</li> <li>Find a wide-open area. The grass fields and parking lots near the visitor center can make a great spot to have a wide view of the sky. Tall trees and hills may block your view.</li> <li>Avoid areas with artificial light sources. You’ll want to find a place that you can step away from car headlights and lights from buildings, to get the best experience.</li> <li>You don’t need a telescope. While a telescope can be a great tool to see smaller night sky objects, they aren’t always necessary. Many planets and constellations can be seen with the naked eye. For an extra boost, try using a pair of binoculars.</li> </ul> <h2>Join us for a Night Sky Program</h2> Ranger-led stargazing programs are offered throughout the year to provide an opportunity to experience unfettered views of the starry night and evoke a new appreciation for the park’s dark sky environment. Attendees get to view planets and other night sky delights through telescopes provided by the park. Be sure to check the current ranger-led program schedule for the dates of your visit to the park to see when Night Sky programs are available. <h2>Preserving Dark Skies</h2> The National Park Service is working to help protect our <a href="https://www.nps.gov/subjects/nightskies/index.htm">night skies</a> and reconnect the world to the stars above. An overabundance of artificial light at night can impact not only people but wildlife too. You can help protect our night skies but turning off lights when they are not needed, and by learning more about the dark skies in the park.

Access to the Big Hollow Trail is from the Maple Springs Trailhead. 

The Big Hollow Trail Loop Trails and Connector Trail offer over 10 miles of single track mountain bike trail that winds through dense woodlands and rocky outcroppings. The trail can be accessed from the trailhead within Maple Springs Campground. Hike and Bike

The Mammoth Cave Railroad Hike and Bike Trail starts in front of the visitor center and connects the park to Park City, KY.

9 miles (14.4 km) Originally opened in 1886 the Mammoth Cave Railroad brought early tourists to Mammoth Cave and other neighboring caves in the area. The train line continued its service for 45 years and made its final run on August 1, 1931. Today, a portion of the path of the former Mammoth Cave Railroad has been converted into a 9-mile hike and bike trail. This trail can be accessed from Park City, KY, several points along Mammoth Cave Parkway, and the park’s visitor center area. Along the trail, cyclists and hikers can stop at historic sites, interpretive waysides, and scenic overlooks. While on the Trail: <ul> <li>Dismount and walk your bicycle at all road crossings.</li> <li>Be aware of hills and steep grades. Walk your bicycle when signs instruct you to do so.</li> <li>Keep your children near at all times.</li> <li>Observe warning signs.</li> <li>Bicycle helmets are recommended for all riders.</li> <li>Remain on the trail and always practice Leave No Trace.</li> </ul>

Road bike

For visitors wishing to travel to Mammoth Cave National Park on two wheels instead of four, the park roadways offer miles of scenic and forested landscape to enjoy on the ride. While on the Road: <ul> <li>Cyclists must respect and obey all rules that apply to automobile traffic, including speed limits and stop signs. </li> <li>Bicycle helmets are highly recommended for all riders.</li> <li>No bike lanes exist on park roads.  Bicycles must be ridden single file and well to the right-hand side of the road, except when passing or turning left.</li> <li>Cyclists should use extreme caution, particularly along narrow areas and blind curves. Wear bright, highly-visible clothing to help drivers see you.</li> </ul>   Part of the U.S. Bicycle Route System Mammoth Cave National Park is included in two U.S. Bicycle Routes (USBRS) that connect urban and rural communities across the United States via signed roads and trails.   TransAmerica Bicycle Route, USBR 76 The <a href="https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/transamerica-trail/">TransAmerica Bicycle Trail</a> was designated in 1982 and spans the nation from coast to coast. On its 4,228-mile (6804.3 km) journey, the trail passes through the states of Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Virginia. Along the way riders can take several spur routs to scenic destinations like Mammoth Cave National Park.   Cave Country Bicyle Route, USBR 23 Designated in 2019, the <a href="https://www.adventurecycling.org/about-us/media/press-releases/kentucky-expands-cycling-options-with-u-s-bicycle-routes-21-and-23/">Cave Country Bike Route</a> connects USBR 76 to the Tennessee boarder, through Kentucky’s Cave Region. The 109-mile (175.4 km) route takes riders through Mammoth Cave National Park and connects to small towns and historic sites.

Most cave tours accommodate all ages*. Youth under the age of 16 years, must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older. *Age limitations are in place on crawling cave tours: <ul> <li>The Trog Tour, ages 8 to 12 years. </li> <li>Introduction to Caving, ages 10 years and up.</li> <li>Wild Cave Tour, ages 16 years and up. </li> </ul>

Ranger-led cave tours draw hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to the park each year. As a result, your tour may include other group(s) of various ages. <h3>Dress Appropriately</h3> You may wish to bring a light jacket during your tour. Cave temperatures can vary widely near entrances (especially in winter), deep cave temperature is 54ºF (12ºC) while surface temperatures in the summer can exceed 90ºF (32ºC). <h3>Cave Tour Accessibility</h3> Visitors with limited mobility may find some cave tours too strenuous. Please review cave tour descriptions and consider your limitations when choosing which tour to participate on. For members of the deaf and hard of hearing community, assisted listening devices and sign language interpreter services are available with advanced arrangements. The park is committed to providing accessible options for all visitors. Learn more about <a href="https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/accessibility.htm">accessibility in the park.</a> <h3>Getting Here</h3> When traveling to the park for a cave tour, plan for adequate travel time to the visitor center to arrive around 30 minutes before the start of your scheduled tour. This will allow for time to find parking, pick up your physical paper tour tickets and time to use the restroom. Do not rely on your mobile GPS or web based mapping applications. These services often lead visitors off track onto routes requiring river crossings via ferry or onto narrow winding roads not suitable for large vehicles. Cave Tours

This is a .6-mile (1 km) out-and-back trail that begins and ends at the same trailhead. As the trail is located very close to the visitor center, it is a great hike to do between ranger programs and scheduled cave tours.

Sunset point is the endpoint of the Heritage Trail, located on the South Side of the park, across the pedestrian bridge from the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center.

Above the winding underground passages of Mammoth Cave, you can gaze over the hills and valleys that make up our Kentucky karst landscape. Take an easy stroll to Sunset Point to enjoy a park-favorite panorama of the Green River Valley where you can catch the best views of fresh spring foliage and vivid autumn colors.

Many visitors enjoy visiting Sunset Point during peak foliage times in the spring and fall.
